Sutton FC kicks off green pledge

Non-league football club Sutton United has committed to cutting its carbon emissions to help spread awareness of green issues to players and fans.

The club is set to become the first football team to certify against the Planet Positive mark, which recognises organisations that not only work to reduce their carbon footprint but also invest in sustainability projects in their local community.

“We realise the importance of reducing our impact and providing our fans with a commitment which they can follow,” explained Sutton United company secretary Dave Farebrother.

“And with a strong community development plan already in place, Planet Positive certification represents the next step in our progress off the pitch.”

The club’s management has confirmed the first step will be to work on changing behaviours. Alongside encouraging staff and players to lead greener lifestyles, the club will also be providing fans with information on how to cut emissions at home.

“Football has a massive part to play in helping people understand that going green is good for you and the planet,” said Steve Malkin, UK CEO of Planet Positive.

“By taking the initiative and becoming the first certified football team we hope that Sutton United can inspire the fans, staff and players to reduce their impact.”
