Lisa Pool looks back on a transformative year for sustainability professionals in 2024

Marked by significant milestones, global engagement and a bold step towards a redefined future, 2024 was a landmark year for IEMA.

We ended the year with 21,863 individual members worldwide, and 343 corporate partners, demonstrating our collective broad and growing influence.

Advancing green skills

Collaborations with leading organisations underscored IEMA’s commitment to green skills development. A partnership with Deloitte yielded the ‘Green Skills for a Green Economy’ training course, piloted in UK prisons and the Middle East, to empower individuals, including underrepresented groups, with sustainable career pathways.

More than 10,000 learners in 67 countries took IEMA certified or accredited courses, demonstrating a continued growing global need for high standards in green and technical knowledge backed by IEMA’s expertly curated skills map.

The Green Careers Hub flourished, with 42,710 active users and over 137,000 views. The Hub supported individuals with their job searches, facilitating 6,418 job applications via the IEMA jobs board.

In 2024, we amplified your impact with bespoke resources and training tailored to your organisation’s needs through our Corporate Partnerships programme (see page 11). Several more IEMA Corporate Partners became accredited training centres, delivering sustainability training into their workforce to ensure education is available to all.

Expanding global reach

A broad coalition of businesses and not-for-profit organisations – including the RSPB, SUEZ, The Wildlife Trusts and the British Chambers of Commerce – mobilised to back our #GreenSkillsAtCOP campaign urging global leaders to prioritise the development of green skills at the COP16 biodiversity and COP29 climate summits.

IEMA’s regional and world volunteers hosted 100 events, attracting 5,000 members and non-members globally, with Hong Kong SAR hosting its inaugural event. Activity across Europe and Australia demonstrated the appetite of professionals in those regions to connect and develop. IEMA also took part in six events through digital contra deals and had a standout presence at EMEX, where we led three impactful sessions, including a live update from COP29.

In October, IEMA Connect received overwhelmingly positive feedback, achieving an impressive net promoter score of 42. The satisfaction ratings reflected a highly engaging experience: 93% of attendees were satisfied with the speakers, while 89% rated overall satisfaction with the conference highly.

Mentoring and guidance

Our work with the University of Strathclyde, supported by ESRC funding, launched a career mentoring programme within the DSI People of Colour network. The initiative has been transformative for participants, accelerating their careers.

IEMA’s greenhouse gas emissions guidance continued to shape major infrastructure decisions, frequently cited in High Court rulings. Throughout the year, we convened influential public affairs roundtables, fostering dialogue between members and UK policymakers.

The transition to ISEP

Following an extraordinary general meeting in December, IEMA members voted to rename the organisation the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP). This strategic shift reflects a broader mission to drive sustainable practices globally.

Transitioning to the new identity will unfold gradually, with rebranding efforts extending into 2025. Members will play a vital part in shaping this transformation, which aims to engage new audiences and expand our collective influence.

Our achievements in 2024 solidify our members’ role as global leaders who are driving impactful change worldwide. The journey ahead promises even greater progress towards a sustainable future.
