Jocelyn Campbell Stark-Bright describes how regional volunteers are building partnerships and sharing knowledge

Our volunteers across all 24 UK regional and world networks are the driving force and the voice of IEMA, representing our values and commitment to sustainability.

Our networks work hard to inspire and educate by creating a diverse schedule of engagement activities.

The partnerships and collaborations with universities and organisations such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand, and People Planet Pint enable us to harness the collective power of knowledge and expertise.

This year, we proudly launched our IEMA Australia network, which hosted its inaugural event in May, featuring a keynote address by IEMA CEO Sarah Mukherjee MBE.

In May we also hosted an online volunteer day, dedicated to recognising the hard work of our volunteers and fostering connections among network members. The event featured workshops led by our internal staff, offering valuable opportunities to engage with the team, ask questions, and leave feeling empowered and inspired.

In 2024 to date, 3,328 members have engaged in 96 events across the globe, hosted by our UK regional and world networks. Members reported that they appreciated the range of speakers from diverse sectors, who provided a variety of perspectives and insights. They found the content across all events informative and engaging and appreciated the valuable networking opportunities, which enabled them to connect and build relationships.

The sessions also facilitated technical knowledge-sharing, which many found beneficial. One attendee at the Midlands’ ‘doughnut economics’ webinar said: “I learned a lot of applicable information. There were very useful pointers for further reading and study, and the interactive sessions were very helpful.”

Each year, as a thank you to our volunteers, IEMA plants a tree. Last year, through the National Trust we planted 203 trees in the UK, which has the potential to offset up to 203 tonnes of CO₂ over the lifetime of the trees.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our volunteers and chairs: Gareth Brown, Kiran Bandaru, John Hill, Antony Gough, Carol Martin, Victoria Chater-Lea, Mohamed Ayeldeen, Dr Rosemary Horry, Kate Copeland-Rhodes, Edward Walker, Claire Brown, David Hoare, Richard Bladon, Stuart Meades, Steven Roberts, Tony Grace, Alan Daly, Kate Turner, Steph Rooke, Gayle Barclay, Kirsty Strannigan, Cameron Scott, Kenneth Reid, Emma Young, Dr Duncan East, Jenny Wade, Morag Robertson, Henry David Bayoh, Danjuma Waniko, Jason Maitland, Brendon James, Dr Rajat Prakash Singhal, Damien Plant, Dr Thomas Burgdorff, Lianne Smith, Kevin Mundy, Sam Crispin, Matthew Mak, Harry Sealy, Adam Weller and Danidu Wijekoon.
