The IEMA Impact Assessment (IA) Network has released Volume 22 of the Outlook Journal, focusing on certification and competency in IA.

Edited by Josh Fothergill, it includes 11 articles by IEMA professionals and IA experts, offering insights into building and recognising IA capabilities.

The articles cover key aspects of IA practice, including competencies in environmental impact assessment (EIA) for health, landscape, visual, and marine sectors, with perspectives from UK and international practitioners.

This issue includes practical advice from IEMA EIA Quality Mark consultancies and reflections on the next steps for enhancing IA competency.

Notably, contributors from the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand share their experiences with regulatory accreditation, reflecting IEMA’s new alliance with the Institute.

The journal also explores the impact of digital tools and artificial intelligence on IA roles, emphasising the importance of adapting to new technologies.

Dr Howard is the policy and engagement lead for Impact Assessment at IEMA and a leading professional in EIA, with two decades of international experience across renewable energy and major infrastructure. A Fellow of IEMA and Chartered Environmentalist, Rufus holds degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Law, and a doctorate in Management. A trusted advisor, Rufus has directed environmental projects for major organisations such as the World Bank, The Crown Estate, Natural Resources Wales, the EBRD, Statkraft, Orsted, National Grid, and the Environment Agency. Rufus lives in Kent with his wife and three daughters and enjoys walking in nature, cooking, music, kayaking and archery.
