  • Beazley

    image

All the good things in life come with a little risk. We should know.

Back in 1986 when we began, the US liability insurance market was in crisis. Things weren't looking good. Not the best time to start a business, you might think. But at Beazley we see every risk as an opportunity to do things differently.

So we took the plunge and started our business, with just a couple of second-hand desks and a handsome old hat stand.

Insurance is about risk, but it’s also about people.

We searched for the Industry's brightest sparks to join us. A diverse bunch, all looking for that rare thing in insurance: an adventure. We certainly found one.

We began putting our heads together to tackle our clients’ biggest challenges. And in a world fast becoming head-scratchingly complex, we set ourselves the goal to become the Industry's go to problem solvers. We've done things differently ever since. In an age of easy assumptions and talking big, we keep an open mind and listen more.

Persevering until we've found the right solution. Our quiet and boundless curiosity have seen us embrace all manner of risks: Boldly going further, from the bottom of the ocean to the surface of the moon.

So that’s our story, in a nutshell. The moral of the tale? Life’s a risky business. But by enabling our clients to explore, create and build a different world, we’re helping to make it a better one. And by striving to do the right thing rather than the easy thing, we’re shaping a brighter future for our people, our partners and the planet.

We definitely think that’s a risk worth taking.

    Insurance. Just different.

Openreach Limited is the UK’s digital network business.

We’re more than 35,000 people, working in every community. We look after the copper wires and fibre cables that connect homes, schools, shops, banks, hospitals, libraries, mobile phone masts, broadcasters, governments and businesses – large and small – to the world.

Our mission is to build the best possible network, with the highest quality service, making sure that everyone in the UK can be connected.

We work on behalf of more than 665 communications providers like BT, SKY, TalkTalk, Vodafone, and Zen, and our broadband network is the biggest in the UK, passing more than 31.8m premises.

Today we’re building an even faster, more reliable and future-proof broadband network which will be the UK’s digital platform for decades to come. We’re making progress towards our full fibre optic network target to reach 25 million premises by December 2026.

Over the last decade we’ve invested more than £15 billion into our network and, at more than 190 million kilometres – it’s now long enough to wrap around the world 4,798 times.

As a business, we understand the imperative to act on climate change and we’re committed to reducing our operational impact. That’s why we and our parent, BT, are aiming to become carbon neutral by 2030 and also build towards being a circular business over the same timeframe.

One of the biggest impacts we can have is on the road, or more pertinently, in the air we all breathe. With more than 27,000 commercial vehicles, we operate the second largest commercial van fleet in the UK and last year our engineers travelled more than 211 million miles, producing an estimate of 113,000 tonnes of CO2. To address this, we’re aiming to transition a third of our fleet to EVs by the middle of this decade and we want a green fleet by 2030.

We want to lead the way in supporting the UK Government’s ambition to phase out diesel and petrol vehicles. And to do that, we’ve been working closely with the Climate Group to establish the UK Electric Fleet Coalition (UKEFC) and with the Prime Minister’s Build Back Better Business Council on the creation of the Electric Van Fleet Accelerator (EVFA), which is looking to tackle barriers that businesses like us face in making the switch.

We are also working with our supply chain to remove unnecessary packaging and reduce our waste, including the removal of single use plastic packaging by 2025.

Openreach is a highly regulated, wholly owned, and independently governed unit of the BT Group.

  • Sellafield Ltd

    image

    About Sellafield Ltd:

    The past
Seventy-five years ago, we helped to create the nation’s nuclear deterrent.

Today, we’re using our unrivalled knowledge of nuclear to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.
At every step in between, our people have decoded the mysteries of the nuclear atom.

Those who went before us were the first to harness its powers to generate electricity on a commercial scale.

They closed the country’s fuel cycle by recycling used fuel and went on to reprocess more than anyone else in the world. And they solved the problem of how to safely look after every type of nuclear waste.

In doing so, they made a significant contribution to national low carbon power generation.

Since 1956, UK nuclear power has saved 2.3 billion tonnes of carbon emissions, the equivalent of all the UK’s emissions from 2015 to 2020.

The present - we are Sellafield
Now we’re taking waste out of buildings that are as old as the site itself, dealing with the legacy of our nuclear past. We’re looking after fuel so that nuclear power stations can continue to operate, and we’re repackaging the country’s stockpile of nuclear materials.

Once our value was measured in kilowatt hours of electricity produced, or the commercial price of reprocessed fuel. Now it is measured in our ability to place nuclear waste into containers that are safe for the long-term, to remove intolerable risks to our environment and to nurture the diverse skills our nuclear community needs.

Today we are taking great steps towards creating our clean and sustainable future.

    The Future
In cleaning up the birthplace of the UK’s nuclear industry, we are once again generating growth and employment in West Cumbria, the North West of England and beyond.

Our 11,000 strong workforce is joined by more than 40,000 people from the best of the best in the nuclear supply chain, from small Cumbrian businesses to global market leaders. We need this diversity of thinking, of backgrounds, cultures and experiences.

Ensuring everyone’s voice is heard is crucial to our success and in making Sellafield Ltd a truly great place to work.
Together, we’re at the forefront of engineering, innovation, project management and leading-edge support functions.
Together, we’re building £8 billion of new waste management facilities and manufacturing tens of thousands of waste containers, while also reducing our carbon footprint.
Together, we’re inventing the robots and technology that we need to clean up Sellafield. Robots and technology that can be exported to the growing global decommissioning market.

In everything we do, we’re ensuring the £2.3 billion of public funding we’re entrusted with has economic and social impact in our communities.

Sellafield is no longer the country’s best kept nuclear secret. It’s where we’re tackling the legacy of the past, building a capability for the future, and where we’re creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.

We are fully committed to sustainability throughout all of our activities, from the operation and management of our campuses, through to teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange. This is realised through our estates and facilities work and through the University’s, Suffolk Sustainability Institute in collaboration with multiple partnership organisations. We also have a committed vision to educate current and future decision-makers and apply academic study to help solve many of the sustainability issues society faces; whilst improving the health and wellbeing of the community we serve

In recent years the University of Suffolk has made significant progress in improving its own sustainability performance and is gaining national recognition, for its leadership in developing and facilitating agenda setting conferences, working groups and events on emerging transformative practice.

Working with IEMA and wider corporate partners is central to the extension of this practice, helping us to pursue and promote innovative and practical knowledge exchange, whilst increasing access to quality CPD training and embedding our sustainable development impact deeper into the region.
