What we do
We're transforming the world to sustainability.
Through the work we do, the influence we exert and the people we collaborate with, we have a global reach that effects real change.
Being a member of IEMA is a journey with real and exciting goals. Each stage of the journey calls on you to play new roles, whether through doing, influencing, developing, learning or leading.
It's important to note that membership progression isn't always linear. Use the button below to assess where you are now according to the sustainability skills map. Doing this will allow you to work out the next step in your journey.
Please note that upgrades carry a one-off upgrade fee to cover the cost of the upgrade process – this is a separate payment to your annual renewal fee, so please ensure that your existing membership is up to date at the time of upgrading.
Upgrade to Graduate if you’ve completed a degree within the last three years, which featured significant sustainability content.
Upgrade to Practitioner if you’ve spent at least 1 year in industry as part of your studies, and can demonstrate enough practical experience.
Upgrade to Associate if you’d like to build a career in this profession but aren't eligible for Graduate or Practitioner membership. If you don’t already have the knowledge, you will first need to take a recognised course, such as the Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management, and then complete an online assessment to qualify.
Upgrade to Affiliate if you’d prefer to simply stay connected to the industry and IEMA’s valuable professional network, rather than actively gain professional recognition at this time.
You already have a foothold as an IEMA member so it’s a great time to gain professional recognition – take a look at the Skills Map to assess what your next step on the journey is.
Upgrade to Practitioner – show us what you’ve achieved in the workplace and through your role via an online assessment and case study exercise. If you are upgrading to Practitioner, you can also apply for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP).

Upgrade to Full membership – Full membership of IEMA is the gold standard for environment and sustainability professionals who are setting agendas and leading initiatives within their organisations. Holding Full membership makes you eligible for Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status as well. Please contact the Membership Team to discuss if this is of interest.
You can also apply for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) status if you are already a Practitioner member, or you can apply for REnvP status at the same time as your initial Practitioner application.
Upgrade to Fellow – demonstrate what you’ve achieved as a visionary leader and ambassador for sustainability, through a peer review, which is a chance to share with us how you are leading change.
