How to: Understand the language of finance

For those who have ever needed to present a business case to your business for funding but don’t have a strong knowledge of accounting, our How to session on finance featured Richard Carter, Lecturer in Accounting, Finance and Sustainability at West Suffolk College who discussed how to effectively achieve this within an environmental context.

This accounts for 1 hour of CPD and is aimed at all levels, whether you're looking to gain or build upon existing skill sets within this area.

Attendees will gain knowledge in:

  • Accounting basics: accountancy vs cash; investment vs expenses; financial statements.
  • Investment appraisal: does it make sense? Why do we need to make a financial return? Payback vs NPV.
  • The business case: what is it and how do I write one? What are the project benefits in economic terms?

Presented by

Richard Carter FIEMA, Chair, West Suffolk College

Richard is a lecturer in accounting and finance at West Suffolk College with a primary interest in the business case for sustainability.
