The turbine, designed by architect Sir Norman Foster, will be located at Sportcity in East Manchester and is one of the tallest in Western Europe. Once operational next year it will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 1,250 homes.
The council's executive member for planning and environment Neil Swannick said: "This development will make the city's leading sporting facility one of the most environmentally friendly in the world."
Pete Bradshaw, social responsibility manager for Manchester City Football Club added: "This wind turbine provides an exciting opportunity to help the Club and the city achieve significant carbon emission reductions.
"The wind turbine is a significant part of a range of energy efficiencies and recycling projects that the Club is involved in."
