NetRegs has published the findings of its SME-nvironment Survey 2009, the fifth in a series of surveys undertaken since 2002. The purpose of the survey was to assess the environmental awareness and activity of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. Seven thousand responses were received ranging across 10 different sectors. The survey found that around a quarter of businesses had an environmental policy in place but just less than four per cent of the SMEs surveyed had an environmental management system (EMS) in place. Of the companies surveyed the most commented upon benefits found from improved environmental performance were a reduction in their operating costs and more motivation within their workforce. The survey did highlight that there had been some impact due to the recent economic situation.
