2 Billion Lack Access to Electricity and Energy

Two billion people lack access to electricity and other modern sources of energy and three billion people still cook on wood or charcoal fires. A report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that by 2030 demand for energy and the discharge of greenhouse gases will have risen by nearly 60%. Two-thirds of this increase will be due to economic growth in developing countries. On the occasion of the 14th session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) a number of leading business organizations including International Chamber of Commerce The World Energy Council (WEC) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) – in collaboration with the UN - will be gathering high level government officials and corporate leaders to debate a roadmap to sustainable energy.
