Reacting to today's report from the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee on the phasing out of gas boilers as part of efforts to cut emissions from houses, IEMA's Head of Policy Ben Goodwin says,
“The BEIS Committee is absolutely right that consumers up and down the country need clear signals on the phasing out of new gas boilers. As its report identifies, switching to cleaner ways of heating our homes is a critical part of wider efforts to meet the UK’s climate targets.
“As with other emerging clean technologies, plans to switch to more sustainable heating solutions must be underpinned by proper investment in the skills and jobs required to deliver the transition. Too many times policies geared at improving the environmental performance of homes and buildings have failed because the skills needed to deliver them have been absent.
“IEMA has consistently called for the development and implementation of a National Green Jobs and Skills Strategy to ensure that there is a pipeline of talent across the breadth of the UK’s economy to deliver on future initiatives, much like replacing gas boilers with greener alternatives.”
