Jonathan Nichols

Principle Natural Capital Consultant at Atkins

Jonathan is one of Atkins’ senior specialists in natural capital approaches. His work focuses on making the business case for nature, using capitals frameworks to enable his clients to understanding their impacts and dependencies on natural assets and transition to sustainability. He uses environmental economics and systems thinking techniques to account for the gains or losses in the benefits provided by natural assets in investment decision making and infrastructure planning. Jonathan has delivered natural capital assessments for water resources projects, transport schemes, flood protection projects, catchment management, river restoration schemes and for nature-based carbon capture plans, and has delivered natural capital training for the water industry on behalf of the Environment Agency. He leads silo-busting project teams of ecologists, economists, engineers, and data scientists at Atkins, and has held roles in business strategy consulting, responsible investment and public policy research. A nature-lover from a young age, he experiments with companion planting and organic veg in pots on is balcony in London.
